Here's what happens in a great downswing.

The hips open up. The shoulders stay square. There's separation between the two. And that separation is what creates power and consistency.

But most golfers never train that feeling. They just try to think their way through it on the course. And that doesn't work.

So we put together three simple drills that teach your body what hip and shoulder separation actually feels like.

Start With Neutral Hips

Before anything else, make sure your hips are in a neutral position. Rock them into anterior and posterior tilt. Find the middle. That's your starting point.

Drill 1: The Chair Drill

Lean on a chair in your golf posture. The chair keeps your shoulders square. From there, just open and close your hips. Your body starts to feel what it's like for the hips to move independently from the shoulders. Simple and effective.

Drill 2: Skiers

Keep your shoulders square and move your feet side to side. This builds rhythm and reinforces that separation without overthinking it.

Drill 3: Skip Rope

This one takes more coordination. Skip rope while keeping your shoulders square and your hips rotating. It forces your body to maintain separation under movement. Challenging but incredibly effective.

The Key Takeaway

You don't need a club to train a better downswing. Teach your body the feeling of hip and shoulder separation off the course, and it'll show up when it matters.
