🏌️♂️ How Green Speed & Slope Affect Break
When you’re putting, the slope and speed of the green can drastically change how much the ball will break. Let’s break it down.
Let’s dive in 👇
⬆️ Uphill Putts
If you hit the ball harder, it starts with a higher initial speed. That means it slows down quicker, giving gravity less time to take effect. As a result, uphill putts break less.
⬇️ Downhill Putts
The opposite is true here. You hit it softer, so the ball has a slower initial speed and takes longer to roll out. That extra time allows gravity to work on it longer, which means more break.
⚡ Green Speed Matters
Faster Greens → More break. This is the same concept as a downhill putt — the ball is rolling slower relative to the green, giving gravity more time to influence it.
Slower Greens → Less break. You have to hit it harder, so the ball spends less time being influenced by gravity.
The good news? You don’t have to guess. The Tour Read® Golf App powered by Odyssey makes it simple to recognize these factors and predict exactly how much your putt will break.
📱 Learn the Tour Read Method
Tour pros don’t guess. They use a repeatable, tested system for reading greens. The Tour Read Golf app teaches you that same method, then lets you practice it until it’s second nature.
