Train Like Justin Thomas: A Simple Drill to Improve Your Takeaway
This week, we’re highlighting a great practice idea from two-time major champion Justin Thomas.
It’s a small tweak to a drill you might already know — and it can make a big difference.
Here’s how it works:
Justin sets up with the club parallel to the ground and parallel to his target line.
He checks that everything — his club, arms, and body — is in a good position.
Instead of stopping there, he takes the club all the way to the top of his backswing and hits a golf ball from that position.
This forces his body to react to the correct starting position, figure out how to deliver the club back to the ball, and build real-world coordination from the drill.

Learn how to make AI work for you
AI won’t take your job, but a person using AI might. That’s why 1,000,000+ professionals read The Rundown AI – the free newsletter that keeps you updated on the latest AI news and teaches you how to use it in just 5 minutes a day.
Why This Matters for You:
Most players stop after the drill rehearsal.
By hitting shots from the correct position, you teach your body how to move naturally from a great start — not just rehearse it in slow motion.
After a few shots, Justin then returns to a normal full swing, blending the feel into a real golf swing.

Bonus Tip from Justin Thomas:
Take a close look at his setup before he even moves the club.
✅ Perfect posture
✅ Knees flexed naturally
✅ Back straight
✅ Arms hanging comfortably
If you start with a great setup and improve your takeaway, your full swing will get better without overthinking a hundred different things.
Quick Practice Plan:
Set up with the club parallel to the ground.
Make sure it’s parallel to your target line.
From that position, take a full swing and hit a ball.
Mix in some full swings afterward to blend the feeling.
