⛳️ Inspired by Ernie Els, built for consistency under pressure
How to Train Ernie Els-Like Tempo in Your Golf Swing
If there’s one name that defines rhythm and smoothness in golf, it’s Ernie Els.
Known as “The Big Easy,” his tempo is legendary — and while you may never swing exactly like Ernie, this simple progression drill will help you find your personal tempo sweet spot and hit more consistent shots under pressure.

⏱️ The Tempo Ladder Drill
To master tempo, you need to train with contrast. That’s exactly what this drill does:
Start at 30%
Barely swing — just feel the motion. No power, all rhythm.
Move to 50%
Let the club start swinging itself. Stay loose.
Swing at 70%
This is the ideal cruising speed for most golfers — balanced, smooth, powerful.
Push to 90%
You’re swinging harder now, but it’s still under control — the hard side of smooth.
Go to 100%
Let it rip. Feel what it’s like to max out — so you know what to avoid under pressure.
🎯 Why It Works
This progression drill trains you to understand what rushing feels like — and how to back off from it.
By learning what 100% tempo feels like, you’ll find it easier to settle into that perfect 70% zone where:
✅ Timing is better
✅ Sequence improves
✅ You stay more balanced
✅ Ball striking becomes more consistent
When you’re under pressure, this drill gives you a mental reference point to stay composed and swing with control.
🧠 Key Takeaway
Tempo isn’t just about swinging slower.
It’s about swinging within yourself—with awareness of how fast is too fast.
Use this drill often, and soon you’ll be hearing compliments like:
“Wow, you’ve got Ernie Els tempo.”
