How JJ Spaun Trains to Make Championship Putts
⛳️ The U.S. Open winner’s method is simpler than you’d think.
🧠 Want to Read Greens Like a U.S. Open Champion?
JJ Spaun just won the 2025 U.S. Open—and the putt he made on 18 is already being called one of the best in tournament history.
So what makes him such a good putter?
Let’s rewind to the Canadian Open—the day before Round 1. JJ was on the green doing a simple, powerful drill using the Tour Read Golf App. In this video, he’s practicing a putt that breaks 6.2 inches left. But what’s more important is how he figured that out.
👇 Here’s what you can learn from his process:
👀 Read From the Low Point
JJ starts by reading the putt from the low side—below the hole. Why?
📊 In a study of 100 golfers, 97% saw the break more clearly from the low side.
That’s not a fluke. When you look downhill, the green looks flat. But when you look uphill—from the low point—you can see the slope and break more clearly. Think of it like viewing terrain from an airplane vs. from the ground. One flattens everything out, the other gives you depth.
So as JJ studies the putt, he walks to the low side, checks the slope, and gets a clear mental image of the break. Then he walks back in and uses the Tour Read App to confirm the exact number: 6.2 inches left.
From there? He simply lines it up, trusts it, and rolls it right in.
🔁 Copy This Process in Your Own Practice
When you’re on the green:
Stand on the low side of the putt first
Look uphill toward the hole to read the slope
Confirm your read with Tour Read, or line up a practice putt with that estimate
Trust the line and roll it with confidence
It’s a simple but effective way to train your eyes—and build the kind of trust that Tour players rely on under pressure.
💬 What JJ Spaun Thinks of Tour Read
When Tour Read co-creator Ralph Bauer asked JJ for his honest thoughts on the system, here’s what he said:
“Pretty damn good, Ralph. You’re like a calculus expert… or a statistics expert.”
That’s coming from a major champion who knows exactly what it takes to read greens at the highest level.
