🎯 Stop Guessing—Start Reading Greens Like a Tour Pro

Most golfers treat green reading like an art project.

They squat behind the ball. They toss grass in the air. They make a wild guess.

And then they wonder why their putts aren’t dropping.

That’s why I created the Tour Read system—and in this video with Cordie Walker from GolfWell, I break down exactly how I teach green reading to the best players in the world.

This is the same system used by players I’ve coached on the PGA Tour, major champions, and college players.

Let me walk you through some of the key takeaways from the video, and show you how to apply them to your own game.

Let’s dive in 👇

👁️‍🗨️ Read the Slope First

Most amateurs try to figure out break after they’ve already looked at the hole. That’s backwards.

In this video, I explain how the first thing a player needs to understand is slope—both the amount and the direction.

The Tour Read app helps you measure this, but even without it, I teach players to start by walking the line and noticing where the water would run. That tells you the low point.

Once you identify that, you can estimate how much slope you’re dealing with:

  • 1% slope: subtle break

  • 2% slope: noticeable break

  • 3%+: pay attention—it’s breaking hard

🤝 Shoutout to GolfWell

Huge thanks to Cordie and the GolfWell team for shooting this video with me. They’re passionate about evidence-based golf improvement and send out one of the best weekly newsletters in the game.

👟 Practice Like the Pros

When I’m working with Tour players, we use this process on the putting green:

  1. Identify slope and direction

  2. Walk off the distance

  3. Apply the formula

  4. Use tees to mark start line and entry point

  5. Hit putts with the same speed every time

This isn’t just theory—it’s how my players have earned over $400 million on the PGA Tour.

It’s also how they avoid 3-putts and roll in more 8–15 footers, the exact range where most amateurs fall short.
